ASNB, or Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad, manages a range of investment funds in Malaysia, including fixed-price fund series such as the ASB (Amanah Saham Bumiputera) and ASM (Amanah Saham Malaysia), as well as variable-price funds under the ASN (Amanah Saham Nasional) series, which includes funds such as ASN Equity and ASN Sukuk.

While many first-time investors are more familiar with fixed-price funds, misconceptions often arise because different ASNB funds work in different ways.

Yet one thing is clear from forums and everyday conversations: people get confused about the basics.

So, here’s a simple challenge. Read each statement, decide whether it’s a myth or not, then check the explanation.

Let’s see how many you get right 👀

Myth #1: “ASNB and ASB are the same thing.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

ASNB is the unit trust management company.

Under ASNB, there are two broad types of fund series, which are commonly referred to by different names:

  • ASB and ASM are fixed-price funds, where the unit price is fixed at RM1.
  • ASN refers to variable-price funds, where the unit price fluctuates based on market conditions.

Quick checklist:

  • ASB and ASM = fixed-price
  • ASN = variable-price
  • ASNB funds = all funds under ASNB

Note: All ASNB unit trust funds are classified as Harus

Myth #2: “As long as you’re non-Bumiputera, you can’t invest in ASNB funds.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

Not all ASNB funds share the same access rules. Eligibility depends on the fund series:

  • ASB is a Bumiputera-only fund
  • ASM is open to all Malaysians (subject to availability of units)
  • ASN is open to all Malaysians but there are certain funds that are exclusive to Bumiputera

Myth #3: “ASB/ASM works like a savings account or fixed deposit.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

They may feel similar, but ASB/ASM are investment products, not deposits.

💡 Pro Tip:

Frequent withdrawals may reduce how effectively your investment compounds or gets reinvested over time.

Myth #4: “ASNB funds returns are guaranteed every year.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

Returns are not guaranteed. Income distributions depend on the fund’s performance and market conditions for that year.

That said, ASB and ASM are often regarded as investment options that have historically delivered competitive income distributions although outcomes may vary depending on fund performance.

Myth #5: “You need a lot of money to start investing in ASNB funds.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

  • You don’t need large amounts to begin
  • Minimum investment amounts are generally accessible
Fund TypeMinimum Investment
Fixed-price fundsRM10
Variable-price fundsRM10
  • How much you start with matters less than starting consistently

ASNB funds are often used to build value gradually, rather than through large one‑off sums.

💡 Pro Tip:

Starting small is normal. What matters more than timing or amount is building the habit of investing regularly and consistently at a pace you’re comfortable with.

Myth #6: “Fixed‑price and variable‑price funds behave the same.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

Here’s a quick overview on the key differences between fixed-price and variable-price ASNB funds.

Variable-Price Funds

Capital fluctuationNoYes
Return typeIncome distribution, subject to fund performanceCapital gains + income
Suitable for investors seekingLong-term growth and income distributionCapital growth through market-linked investments

This explains why some investors are surprised when variable‑price ASN funds move up or down in value 📊

Myth #7: “ASNB funds are risk-free.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

ASNB funds carry different levels and types of investment risk depending on the portfolio of the fund.

  • Fixed-price funds generally have lower volatility compared to market-linked investments
  • Variable-price funds are subject to market movements and may fluctuate in value
  • Returns of both are not guaranteed

While fund features vary, no investment is entirely risk-free.

Myth #8: “You can withdraw your ASNB funds anytime like a savings account.”

Is this a myth?

It depends 🤔

Both fixed‑price and variable‑price ASNB funds allow withdrawals, but they are not designed to function like savings accounts.

  • Fixed‑price funds offer redeemability at a fixed unit price, subject to conditions and limits.
  • Variable‑price funds are also redeemable, but the withdrawal value depends on the fund’s NAV at the time of redemption.
  • For both fund types, large or frequent withdrawals can affect how effectively profits are compounded or reinvested over time.

In short, ASNB funds are accessible investment products, not cash accounts, and are generally better suited for longer‑term holding.

Myth #9: “Investment in ASNB funds alone is enough to build wealth.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

ASNB funds can play an important role in building your finances, but it is usually just one part of a broader strategy.

In practice, many investors combine approaches, such as using ASNB funds as a steady foundation while allocating to higher-growth assets over time. This allows them to maintain portfolio stability with long-term wealth-building opportunities.

No single product typically does everything.

Myth #10: “The more you invest, the higher your return rate.”

Is this a myth?

This is a myth ❌

It is common to assume that investing a larger amount will lead to a higher return rate, but that is not how ASNB funds work. Returns are determined by the fund’s performance and the distribution declared per unit, not by how much an individual investor puts in.

Investing more can increase the total returns you receive in ringgit terms, because you own more units. However, the rate of return remains the same across investors in the same fund.

In the long run, consistency and staying invested often matter more than the size of any single contribution.

Bottom Line: How Many Did You Get Right?

If some of these surprised you, you’re not alone 🙂. Knowing the differences between fixed-price and variable-price ASNB funds makes them easier to navigate.

Many misconceptions come from:

  • Outdated assumptions
  • Confusion between fund types
  • Treating investment products like savings tools

At its core, ASNB offers:

  • Professionally managed unit trust funds
  • A range of fixed-price and variable-price funds designed to meet different investment preferences
  • A way to grow money steadily as part of a broader financial plan

Some myths apply more to fixed-price funds, while others relate to variable-price funds. Understanding both helps you make better decisions.

Ultimately, what matters is not whether something is “good” or “bad”, but how it fits your financial goals.

To keep things simple, you can track and manage your ASNB funds via the CIMB OCTO App or CIMB Clicks, so your investments sit alongside your everyday banking in one place 📱.

The easier it is to stay organised, the easier it is to stay consistent ✅
