Filing your income tax for the first time can be intimidating, to say the least. For first-time taxpayers, we’re here to make it simple for you – guiding you step-by-step from registering with e-Daftar.

But first, let’s clarify if you need to file for income tax. According to the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN), any individual earning a minimum of RM34,000 for the financial year after EPF deductions must register a tax file. In other words, you need to pay income tax if you’ve been earning a minimum net salary of RM3,000 per month or RM2,833 per month after EPF deductions, for an entire year.

If you fulfil the requirement above, you’ll need to do two things: first, register as a taxpayer and second, register for e-Filing, LHDN’s online tax filing platform. Here’s a quick overview of the whole process of filing your income tax in Malaysia for the first time.

How to register as a first-time taxpayer?

Start off your registration as a first-time taxpayer by visiting the nearest LHDN branch or the LHDN website.

If you choose to register via web, be sure to select "individu" under "Jenis Pembayar Cukai".

If you need to follow up on your application, you can check via e-Daftar, give LHDN a call at 03-8911 1000 or head to their nearest branch.

How to obtain a PIN number for e-Filing registration?

Now that you’ve registered as a taxpayer, you’ll need to register for e-Filing on the ezHASiL platform.

If you’re registering for e-Filing for the first time, you’ll need a one-time login 16-digit PIN provided by LHDN. You can get it from the nearest LHDN branch office.

How to log in to e-Filing for the first time?

Once you have your PIN number, you can head over to the ezHASiL website or the LHDN’s new service portal, MyTax.

  • First, you’ll need to click ‘First Time Login’. Then, key in your PIN number and identification number and click ‘Submit’. Once you’ve logged in, set up your account by filling in the necessary information.

  • You’ll be required to create a new password for subsequent logins. Be sure to create a password you won’t forget or write it down somewhere safe.

  • Don’t forget this important feature – your security phrase. This phrase serves as a secondary layer of security, preventing unauthorised access to your account. Similar to online banking services, your security phrase will appear the next time you log in to e-Filing.

  • Once you’ve got that sorted, click ‘Agree’. Then, confirm your information on the next page and click ‘Submit’.

Voilà, the following message should appear: “Your Digital Certificate has been successfully registered. Please click here to log in.”

Congratulations! You’re ready for the next step
