Good news for all Malaysians! We will enjoy 6 long weekends in 2020 thanks to our national public holidays. As staycations and short trips grow in popularity, maximising our long weekends and strategically taking leave are now a must.

In 2020, you can boost your public holidays to enjoy 12 long weekends, just by taking 9 leave days.

Before you make hotel or flight reservations, there are a few factors that you should consider. Travelling on public holidays can sound tempting but it does come with a few cons:

  • Festive price hikes - Thinking of escaping to Bangkok, Hong Kong or Bali for the long weekend? Travelling during festive seasons such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, and Christmas, or even the eve of weekends, can mean higher flight prices, sometimes more than twice the usual prices.

  • Everyone's on holiday - Take note that the mid-term school holidays will coincide with Hari Raya. This may cause accommodation cost across the country to surge.

  • Traffic, traffic, traffic - Public holidays can also cause domestic travel to peak, making popular holiday destinations overcrowded and difficult to enjoy. Highway travel can become severely congested, causing you to spend hours stuck at a standstill (which can increase your petrol consumption).

However, sometimes the peak season prices and the longer journeys are worth it if it means spending quality time with your loved ones.

What can I do?

Use these travel hacks to keep your wallet happy and make the most of your holidays, whether you’re planning a quick getaway or longer break:

Use Google Flights to find cheaper flight dates

Type in your destination on Google Flights and check their price graph to find the cheapest dates to fly. You can view prices for the whole month at a glance, and even track prices for your desired routes to book them when the price drops.

Matta Fair 2020

For those looking to travel in the second half of 2020, MATTA Fair will be held in PWTC, Kuala Lumpur from 13 to 15 March 2020. For those who are not located in the city, fret not – travel agencies and airlines tend to offer promotions around this time as well.

Look for discounts and promotion codes

It’s deal hunting time! Browse for travel, accommodation and other deals on websites such as CIMB Deals, Fave, Expedia.com, Agoda, Booking.com, Trivago, Hotel.com, Klook and more.

Credit card offers

Does your credit card offer travel or accommodation promotions? Now is the time to take full advantage of them.

Use a cash back app

Be a savvy shopper and use apps such as ShopBack or Rebate Mango when booking your tickets (bus, train or even flight!), accommodation and attractions to get rewards and cash back.

Finally, don’t forget your insurance

Personal accident insurance, travel insurance, and rental car insurance are essential to making sure you don’t have to fork out huge sums of money if something goes wrong.

That’s all! Now all you have to worry about next is packing your bags. Happy holidays!
